Bat care is an exceptionally rewarding element of what West Yorkshire Bat Group volunteers do. We have been physically caring for bats for as far back as the 80s and currently rescue approximately 100 bats a year. For the last 40+ years as a bat group thousands of bats must have been rescued by us.
Being a bat care volunteer can range from ambulance trips (collecting and dropping off bats) to the full time hand rearing of dependent baby bats. As well as being rewarding it can present with challenges and often can be upsetting, particularly when a bat you have been looking after doesn’t make it.
